Rhetorical Analysis Paper
The first paper I was assigned to write during my college career was a rhetorical analysis paper for my Communication, Arts, and Sciences class. We were assigned to select a famous speech or piece of writing, and then analyze the writer's rhetoric and its effectiveness. This was early in the first semester, so I was still struggling to comprehend the whole idea behind good rhetoric and how to properly analyze it. During my research, I came across Hillary Clinton's speech to the United Nations World Conference on Women. The speech moved me emotionally, and the rhetoric that Clinton used was very powerful and convincing. I was very happy with the finished product of my rhetorical analysis essay, and through writing this paper, I came to better understand the concept of what makes effective rhetoric.
Specifically, I analyzed how the rhetoric in Clinton's speech reminded the audience why they had an obligation to promote women's rights around the world. The biggest strength of this essay is the analysis of the way Clinton used her personal experiences, examples from history, and kairos to reinforce the idea in her audience that action needed to be taken to increase women's rights worldwide. I believe that my thesis in this piece was very solid, which helped me build a strong analysis throughout the rest of my paper. Overall, I think it was one of my best works from this particular class.
